Dan Scuka, President
Scuka Enterprises Ltd.
Dan Scuka says that his company's success is founded on three key principles
that he learned from his father.
"Treat your trades fairly. Pay them on time. And pay them what
you agreed to," says Dan. "I learned a lot of business wisdom
from my dad, and that's what we've built our reputation on."
Dan's father, Mario Scuka, started Scuka Enterprises Ltd. as a family
construction business in Saskatchewan in 1967. He moved his family -
and business - to Kelowna in 1975 where he specialized in home renovations
and building new houses. The senior Mr. Scuka was a carpenter, and Dan
grew up working with him after school, on weekends and during summer
breaks, learning the construction business from the ground up.
Following a stint in college where he got a degree in Electronics,
Dan returned to Kelowna in 1985 to work as a Construction Supervisor
with his father. Over the years, Dan has been involved in every aspect
of the company's development and growth, and eventually took over the
business in 1987.
The small family business that his father started in 1967 has since
grown to become a thriving construction company with residential and
commercial projects throughout British Columbia and Alberta including
a 119 unit hotel in Lethbridge, Alberta. Scuka Enterprises employs about
15 people full-time year round, and up to 45 people during peak construction
periods.
"Probably one of the most important things I've learned is to
deliver on our promises, no matter what," says Dan. "We
do what we say we're going to do. The days of multi-million dollar
deals being done on a handshake are over, but we still operate on
those same principles."
Dan is a member of The Executive Committee (TEC) Canada, an international
organization of CEOs that meet on a regular basis in Vancouver to exchange
ideas and learn from each other's experiences.
Just as the company has grown, so has Dan's family. He and his wife
Halina have three energetic girls - Rachel, Kaylin, and Hannah - that
keep them on their toes and help maintain their active lifestyle.
